What happened to the Pension in my old job?

“What happened to the pension in my old job?”

This is a question I have been asked a number of times when doing financial reviews for clients.

Many of us leave our jobs and are so focused on a fresh start and looking forward that we neglect to address what we’re leaving behind……our pension funds!

New and Old Job Words on Road sign

Your choices as regards what to do can vary depending on the structure of the pension scheme. Here are some potential options:

  1. Leave the money where it is and take your benefits from the scheme at the stated retirement age (typically 65)
  2. Transfer it into a pension plan in your new employer’s scheme
  3. Transfer the money into a PRSA
  4. Transfer the money into a Personal Retirement Bond (PRB)

This year my clients have moved money out of their old pension funds to buy property (commercial and residential), invest in the stock market or grow their pension pot through structured investment funds.

While Option No.4 (PRB) may be the best option for most people, I have advised many clients not to move their pension funds as the scheme they are in is well funded and has a promise to pay a decent income to them at retirement.
